Online Community for Adventist Missionaries

The Workplace Online Community  is a meeting place designed to help Adventist missionaries:

  • Connect
  • Learn
  • Receive and give support
  • Network
  • Grow together in missionary service

It’s a secure digital platform kept exclusively for Adventist long-term expatriate church employees, cross-cultural missionaries, and those who support them.

Let’s explore what it’s all about and how you can be part of it.

Why Be Part of a Community?

The most straightforward reason is connection.

It is now possible to connect with a community of people who share your aspirations and calling. It’s possible to be part of a group of people who understand your frustrations and challenges.

We don’t have to go it alone. We can be in this together.

Support, Learning, and Networking

There are, of course, several additional benefits that prove to be a blessing.

Among them:

  • Immediate access to division and General Conference support teams
  • Participation in missionary learning and development initiatives
  • Networking opportunities with church planters, professionals and leaders serving cross-culturally

Below is an example of a post in the Workplace Online Community that lets members know of an online meeting that’s coming up (at the time of writing, of course).

Here is another example, where a community member shares a few thoughts with other members.

Many more examples could be shared. But the best thing to do, of course, is to become a member and experience it for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many People Are on the Platform Already?

The community currently brings together 661 individuals from around the globe. And this number is growing from week to week.

Do I Have to Be an ISE to Join?

We make this platform accessible to Adventist long-term cross-cultural missionaries serving under the ISE program as well as missionary expatriates under other programs, including:

  • Inter-Union employees
  • Long-term contracts
  • ASI registered Adventist mission agencies personnel
  • Certified tentmakers
  • Others
Is the Platform Secure?

Not very many places on the Internet are absolutely bulletproof.

However, the Workplace platform is a business product that was designed with large corporations in mind. These organizations are highly cognizant of safety matters and demand a solid infrastructure from social platform creators. Workplace is one of the best products in this category.

At the same time, we invite our members not to share any information that can expose sensitive information or put people in danger.

Who Is Behind This Initiative?

The Workplace Online Community is brought to you by the Institute of World Mission in close collaboration with the ISE Support and the International Personnel, Resources and Services (IPRS) teams — all entities of the General Conference Secretariat.

What Is the Purpose of a Social Network for Missionaries?

Many Adventist missionaries are challenged to live, serve and witness cross-culturally.

At IWM and ISE Care teams, we offer learning, support and community.

As a result, missionary families or single missionaries are empowered to

  • Establish a happy home
  • Build lasting friendships
  • Enjoy spiritual vibrancy and fruitfulness

— all in a new culture and host community.

What Do I Need to Join?

Two things:

  1. A completed application form
  2. An email address

Please keep in mind that your experience with the platform will depend on the kind of email address you provide.

Here is what that means.

There are two ways to join the community.

1. Internal account — this is the preferred method. With this, we create an account for you. You get to set up your own password and manage your account. The benefits of this setup include the ease of communication between members, as well as the ability to browse through and join open groups or create new discussion groups within the network. A personal email is required for this setup.

2. Stand-alone account — if you want to join with a business-type email, you will need to come in as an external user. You will need to receive permission from other members to communicate with them through chat, and you will need to be invited to every group you want to be a part of.

Can I Join if I'm Not a Missionary Myself but Support Other Missionaries?

Yes. You are welcome to join the community.

One of the reasons for its existence is to provide immediate and safe communication between support personnel and the missionaries in the field.

Will I Lose My Membership if I Return From Cross-Cultural Ministry?

It’s up to you.

If you want your account terminated and all your data deleted, we will definitely honor your wishes.

On the other hand, if you want to continue being part of the community, you’ll have that opportunity.

We know that once a missionary, you’ll always be a missionary at heart.

And it may very well be that you will return to cross-cultural ministry after some years back home.

How to Join

To join the community, please fill out this short application form. We should be in touch with you within 1-3 business days.
